Tyrian Purple Kit Set

550,00

100% genuine Purple Dye replica kit set.

After years of experiments and research and at the demand of many of my friends around the world, I thought of putting together the main ingredients of this legendary dye in small elegant mini kits that would be ideal for workshops, lectures or presentations so that other people in other parts of the world can see and smell what these dyes looked like centuries ago!

Each of these mini wooden kits comes complete with:

1. A set of 3 murex shells the kinds historically used to produce the dye namely (from right to left in the attached photo) Purpura haemastoma, Hexaplex trunculus and Bolinus brandaris.

2. Some dried glands (the organ that actually yields the dye precursor inside the snail)

3. A capsule of nearly pure purple pigment that was in ancient times worth several times its weight in gold (for instance up to 100 pounds of fresh snails are needed to produce less than 1g of more or less pure pigment)

4. Small samples of dyed silk and wool (10 different hues in total)

If preserved properly, murex dyes and pigments remain vibrant and shiny for centuries and even intensify with time as the dyed stuff keeps interacting with the elements (precisely sun light).

These dye kits are available in limited quantities or on demand since the dye production is painstakingly slow and as I said I am just processing what little amounts of snails I use for my own family consumption.”

Description

“There are some colors that even centuries of oblivion and forgetfulness can’t get hold of, colors that will simply live on forever! Not even in my wildest dreams had I ever imagined that a few words in history class some 27 years ago would lead to such an incredible journey and human adventure. Over the last 13 years I have been relentlessly studying one of the ancient world’s most highly prized commodities “Royal purple” and with every new trial came a different hue a different color as this incredibly rich dye interacted with the elements and the fibers in a different way with every new experiment. It’s a true blessing to be able to handle first hand these magnificently rich colors that most other people in the world would only have the chance to read about in the books … then I vowed to share whatever results I could achieve with passionate people all over the world, with family and friends, with adults and children..

My dye work is of course light years away from the massive scale industry that at some point almost brought several varieties of mollusks to the brink of extinction precisely near big Mediterranean dyeing centers, my intention has never been to revive this once extremely lucrative industry, yet it happens that these snails are also edible and very healthy and are commonly consumed in many cities around the Mediterranean so I simply thought why not bringing back to life a 4000 years old dye while enjoying a lovely dinner!
