Arak

Unique and flavorful drink from Lebanon.

Arak is an unsweetened anise-flavored spirit that is distilled in a copper karkeh or alembic. The anise flavor is characteristic of many traditional Mediterranean drinks, including ouzo in Greece and raki in Turkey.

To serve arak in the traditional Lebanese way, you would pour one part of arak into a glass, then add two parts of fresh water. This dilutes the spirit and mellows the anise flavor, making it more palatable. Finally, you would add ice cubes to chill the drink.

Arak is often enjoyed as an aperitif before a meal, and it pairs well with mezze, which are small dishes of appetizers and dips that are commonly served in Lebanon and throughout the Middle East.
